Hello wise friend,
I’m back. Visiting you via your inbox after an unexpected hibernation.
Recovery from an operation takes quiet patience and gentle time. A mustering of ones energy to hold the space, really hold the space, for the body to repair and heal. I surrendered into the journey. Listened well to my body (well, most of the time) and now feel ready to slowly emerge back into the world. Gently. Gently.
Throughout my hibernation, I thought a lot about the comfort which comes from the ordinary. The small, seeming insignificant moments that fill us with light. Quiet pleasure. Warmth. The glow of contentment.
All too often we hurry past these ordinary moments. Distracted by the busyness of life.
It is only when one or more has been taken away from us that we begin to miss their comforting presence. Long for their return. Promise never to under love them ever again.
So its no surprise, I have become a devoted seeker of ordinary moments. Those simple things that fill my soul with the good stuff. They quietly live in plain sight.
I gather them as restorative balms. Witness them in slow time. Embrace their wholeness. Smile, with my whole body, each time I am in their comforting presence. I no longer rush past them. As John Kabat-Zinn says “The little things, the little moments, they aren’t little”.
The above photo, taken earlier this year, is one of my favourite ordinary moments that oozes Big comfort for my human body. A freshly brewed chai tea (no surprises there), a special antique Japanese tea cup (its fake but I love it), a good book and sitting outside next to my healing herbs. The plants and I often have a chat. Plants can be great therapists you know!
So now I’m wondering what ordinary moments comfort you? Give you the feeling of being wrapped in a warm cosy blanket.
As a side note I can happily recommend the book (in photo above) Phosphorescence by Julia Baird – On awe, wonder and things that sustain us when the world goes dark. I love Julia’s writing and her personal reflections. It is an uplifting book even though she has gone through some dark times. There is always a strand of light that leads to resilience inside each and everyone one of us.
I have begun sharing helpful rituals, practices and tools once again over on instagram. Hope to see you there.
In the words of Mary Oliver “Are you breathing a little and calling it life“
Take care my friend and remember to breathe. She’s the most potent inner medicine you have.
Stay safe.
