Grow Your Own Fresh Air With 3 Indoor Plants:

May 16, 2011 by Carole Bourne 7 Comments

Researcher Kamal Meattle gives a fabulous talk on Ted TV.  The topic “How to grow fresh air in your home”.  His 15 years of research amazingly reveals that all you need is 3 common indoor plants.

In fact, he is so convinced of his research that he happily suggests you could live in a glass bottle with the top sealed and have plenty of oxygen with only these three common indoor plants.

An added bonus with his research showed that  the money plant is particularly effecient at removing toxins and volatile chemicals.  He calls it the specialist plant.

Awesome don’t you think !  And, yes I did run out and buy a few more money plants for my home after reading this.

Further, studies have shown Kamal Meattle has the healthiest office building in India – and if you spend 10 hours in his building your blood oxygen levels will increase by at least 1%.

Impressive !

Following are what I believe to be the most important facts from Kamal MeattlesTED TV presentation.  And, good luck with improving the quality of air in your home or office.

Grow your own fresh air with 3 common plants:

1.  Mother in laws tongue ( bedroom plant) (Converts C02 into oxygen at night)

2.  Areca Palm (living room plant) (removes Co2 and converts it into oxygen)

3.  Money plant (removes formealdhye and other volatile chemicals – the specialist plant)

You can listen to Kamal Meattles talk on TED TV by clicking here.

Maintenance of plants:

Wipe the leaves at least once a week in cleaner air cities.

In Delhi you need to wipe the leaves at least once a day

Take them outdoors every 3 – 4 months

Where do toxins come from in your home:

Everyday exposure is a great new interactive web site that shows you room by room just where toxicity might be.

They have a learning centre and list explaining all about the harmful toxins such as:

Parabens – chemical additives found in your cosmetics, toothpaste, shampoo etc

There’s also a book by Mr Wolverton that might interest you called    How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or Office.  He’s the guy who conducted the plant studies for NASA.
