A Guide To Cleansing The Energy In Your Home:

by Carole Bourne

“Fresh, invigorating energy fills my life.” Denise Linn

The atmosphere (energy) in churches, temples and cathedrals is continuously being cleansed and blessed with incense, bells, candles, sound, salt, prayer and more.  The result a sacred space that feels safe, peaceful and deeply nurturing.

So, why not practice a simple energy cleansing ritual yourself, (borrowed from the priests and monks), to cleanse the atmosphere in your own personal living space.  Its a fabulous way to remove negative and stale energy that may be lingering from past illness, arguments or upset.

Its all about clearing out the old and making way for the new.    No experience needed – only the intention, a few ingredients/tools and about a half an hour of your time.

I have passionately studied for over 20 years space cleansing ceremonies around the world, from many ancient cultures.   And still to this day, perform energy cleansing rituals on people’s homes (although its not something I advertise – ssssh!).

Of course, energy cleansing rituals can be quite time consuming (mine usually take around 2 hours).  However my intention with this guide, is not to “turn you off” energy cleansing with too many steps and complex tools, but to inspire you  with a very do-able, safe and easy to follow guide.

I trust that you really do notice a change, and a difference in the way your home feels once you have cleansed and blessed the energy in your home.  Your questions and feedback, as always, are most welcome.  Please do let me know how you go.

Clear the clutter (first) for better results:

I release the past with ease and trust in the process of life” Louise Hay

Before you begin I highly recommend putting a little time aside to sell/give-away or throw out some unloved, unused,  broken, haven’t used in 2 years,  expired or doesn’t fit stuff  from your cupboards, corners and hidden spaces.

Now, if the whole idea of clearing clutter is overwhelming or seems too time consuming, here’s a few articles I’ve written in the past, which may give you the inspiration and kick in the butt you may need to start clearing out some of that old stuck stale energy.   Good luck.

Let go of your emotional clutter  - 4 effective clutter busting games  - Simple solutions when you can’t clear your clutter

Tools and ingredients for energy cleansing:

Ancient cultures include sound and elements from nature to perform their space cleansing rituals.  Choose at least one from each category below to use in your cleansing practice.

1: Sound instrument (bell, Tibetan singing bowl, clap sticks, drums etc.).  I generally use my Balinese Priest bell, clapping (my own hands) and a harmony ball. Sound of course can also include your own voice eg.  Chanting om has a very powerful effect on the energy in any room.

2: Something from the earth to cleanse (e.g. salt, the smoke from white sage, or pine needles or hand made specialized incense).  I use rock salt and white sage always.

3: Holy water (ordinary water that has been infused with sunshine, chanting, holy basil leaves or blessed).  My holy water has received a few hours of sunshine and a few hours listening to chants and mantra’s from my CD player.  Of course you can add flower essences, essential oils or even crystals to infuse the water with a higher energy.

4:  Fire – candles

5:  An infusion of nature (optional) ( flowers, crystals, stones, rice )  Its always a nice touch to add a favourite crystal, stone or flowers to the ritual.

A simple 8 step guide for cleansing the energy in your home:

You will be walking around the inside of your home at least 6 times – moving along each wall of each room – and spending longer in certain spots where you feel the energy is a little heavier or stuck.  Begin and finish at the alter you have set up or alternately your front entrance, whichever feels right for you.

Be as present, and in your body as you can, stay hydrated, remember to breath and above all, trust your intuition. Stop and rest whenever you need to, particularly if your mind starts to wander.  Mindful awareness is the key.

1:  Set your intention:

Have a clear intention as to the reason why you are doing it.   Write it down, then read it back to yourself.  Make sure it feels right for you.

For example -  “I now let go of old stuck energy from my life and home easily and attract new beginnings and opportunity”.

2:  Create a temporary special space (altar):

To make your cleansing ritual extra special, I always love to set a small space aside with all my tools/ingredients.  I cover a small part of a table with a special sarong that I only use for space clearing. I then add a bowl of salt, holy water, sage, bells, harmony ball, candles, fresh flowers and whatever else I may be inspired to add on the day e.g. crystals, space clearing mist, statues of Quan yin, Ganesha or Buddha.

3:  Begin with a prayer of thanks:

It’s always a lovely idea to say a little prayer, affirmation or mantra before you begin.  It adds a dash of specialness to your ritual and acknowledges the start of the cleansing process.  No rules here, do whatever feels right for you.  Its also a great time to light your candle.

4:  Sprinkle your floor with rock salt:

Start in your chosen location (front door or altar) and hold your bowl of rock salt.   Move around your home sprinkling a handful of rock salt across doorways, in corners and anywhere where you feel the energy is heavy.  For example it may be all around a bed due to a illness, in the kitchen due to lots of arguments or along the window sill next to troublesome neighbours.  Leave for 12 hours if you can.

Trust your gut feelings.

5: Clap away  stagnant energy:

Now you will be moving around your home for the second time – clapping continuously.   Clapping is a fabulous way to sense and read the energy in your rooms.

When a clap is crisp, clear and easy to do then it generally indicates the energy is light and flowing.  When a clap is heavy, dull or flat sounding this generally alerts you to the fact there is stagnant/stuck energy.   Stay in these spots for longer, continuing to clap until you feel your clap becomes crisper and clearer.

5:   Use your sound instrument to cleanse even deeper:

Now you will be moving around your home for the third time – this time with your sound instrument.  Bell, singing bowl,  Tibetans bells or tingsha cymbals etc.

Again, linger longer in areas that you feel have a thicker energy.  Repeat any room you feel may need it.

6:   Uplift with a harmony ball / infinity symbol:

This will be the fourth time now you are moving around your home.  This step is not so much about clearing negative energy but infusing a lighter or higher vibration in the atmosphere of your home.

I personally prefer to use a harmony ball which sends a lovely light gentle tinkle into the vibe of a room.   If you don’t have a harmony ball then draw the infinity symbol (figure 8 on its side) into each wall and room of your home.

The infinity symbol is a powerful ancient symbol that can bring balance and harmony back into a space when repeated.  You might be surprised what a difference infusing your rooms with the ancient symbol has on the atmosphere.

7:  Uplift with holy water

On your fifth circle of your home, flick or spray your holy water into the centre space of each room to infuse a lovely healing energy.  Flick or spray into the corners if you feel they need it – they generally do.

8:  Uplift with prayer or mantra

This will be your sixth and last time you circle the energy of your home.  You simply walk into each room and offer a prayer, affirmation or mantra.    Don’t rush, be calm and mindfully repeat your mantra to each room.  Finish with your own prayer of thanks.

Extra tips for success:

1: Clear as much clutter as you can beforehand.

2: Only perform an energy cleansing ritual when your energies are strong, your thoughts are clear and preferably there is no-one else in the house.

3: Pay close attention to the corners – they are well known spots to hold stuck, dead or heavy energy.

My infinite gratitude for sharing this. I did the cleanse last night and it has been a tremendous success. What a beautiful ritual.

I am now wondering what I should do with all of the rock salt. It has been at least 12 hours now. How should I dispose of it? Is it OK to keep it?

Carole Fogarty February 6, 2012 at 9:26 am

Hi Julianna, Just vaccum it up and throw it out. xx Carole

Hi Carole,

My name is Claire I live in Derry in n.Ireland I am a mother of 3 a they are 16, 12, and 4 and am very happily married! My home has energy in it be it negative or what I dont really know! Things have been going on for years on and off but recently are more frequent. i have always know something was about my husband although very supportive I am sure thinks until recently that I am mad. Always round about the same time every night 3.10am I would usually wake feeling on easy knowing something is watching me! Anyways that has eased off abit but my eldest daughter has informed me that she has woken up at this exact time a few nights and cant get back to sleep through fear! We dont live in a big home a small 3 storey 4 bedroom terraced house. We all see movement on the stair case from the corner of our eye, our staircase runs through the side of our living room. Sorry for rabbling! My Son who is 12 about 12-18 months ago seen a man in his bedroom which is the attic room on the third floor …this scared the daylights out of him his first and i think only experience, he said he was very tall and dressed in late 1800-1900 clothing ! He was in real shock and very upset…i tried to make him feel at ease by saying maybe it was a late ancestor looking in on him…but my son quickly responded by saying why did he move infront of the door when i tried to get out? what could I say…does this mean it is negative and wants to scare! Now I seen this man a few months before at the bottom of my bed staring at me and when i woke my husband he disappeared…i knew it was a man as he gave me a domineering feel yet I could not make out any facial details or clothing! Got my home blessed by a priest after my son seen this spirit! Dont feel that there is any thing bad but have recently been feeling and have seen the spirit of what I think is a little boy and night …my husband has also seen him…but more recently which worry s me my husband has seen him run into my eldest daughters room during the day now in solid form…as if to say chase me which he did as he thought it was our 4 yearold daughter! I have went round my home before i read your article and blessed it again with holy water and i blessed salt (table salt) and put it on all the window s and front door and back door! Ye know its weird because I have been seeing and feeling things all my life not often but in nearly every home I have lived in…is it me or just luck….will your cleansing work for me! When u feel a little fear is this normal or cause for concern…is the little boy really a little boy? I did not lose a child before I have researched the house no one has died here…plus the little boy is more of the 70′s to the 80′s in his clothing and hair style…can spirits be passed down through families? Any help or advice you can give me would be very welcome! many many thanks Claire. (please could u email me as well i am not to great on computers I usually just stumble upon things lol)

Dear Claire
It happens and seem you all been through a very weird and disturbing events.
First things first that is don,t lose hope have full faith in GOD , He is always there for you and he is testing you be strong.
Go in following steps gradually.
Now as rightly said above remove all the clutter and unwanted , old , tattered things and throw them away.
Clean your home with broom , vacuum cleaning .
Wash all the laundry, sheets , curtains etc.
Let lots of Sunlight enter your home during day.
Open windows during the day so fresh air enters.
Once done
you can follow the following things
Place image of Jesus or mother mary in blessing posture and not in painful mode .
If you have no issue with hindu religion you can play ” Gayatri Mantra’ or Chanting of “Om” during day .
when you are ready for cleansing process of your house
do this for one week
Let all your family members take bath daily
don’t cook any meat go for vegetarian diet (it’ll also help detoxify your bodies)
On TV try to watch only light comedy shows or so no thriller or horror
burn incense stick daily
Pray Lord everyday and sit for Lunch or Dinner all together it’ll help you all be bond together and be strong.
best of Luck

Hi Carole,

Thanks for leaving this article.

My wife and I have recently bought a new home (built in 1920) in ottawa, canada. I have strong intuition and have a strange feeling about this home which we have purchased. At times the home feels fresh and open, at other times, it feels very heavy and closed. I have also felt a presence.

The woman who previously lived there with her two children for 30 years, went through a divorce many years ago and was very lonely.

I will do the cleansing ritual to rid the negative energy, but is there anything I can do about the presence?

My concern includes the fact that my wife and I will try to have children in near future.

thank you kindly.

Chrisy August 1, 2012 at 6:15 am

Hi Caroline
I had a negative energy in my home over a year ago and managed to remove it using White Sage and Salt Water in a glass to capture any negativity.
I have a friend who also has the same problem I’ve tried the same methods and they’ve worked but every so often the smells come back (rotting flesh) Today I’ve been told that the salt water that I left by his front door (inside) Has climbed the glass (normal) crystalised (normal) but the salt crystals are turning black ( NOT NORMAL). What should be my next step? Will it be a case of using your step by step methods above?

zahida October 8, 2012 at 11:34 pm

Hi i feel i have bad energy n my home i am muslim can i still follow your advice really want to clear the house as nothing good happens in my life, really need your help. Regards zahida y

Umesh October 12, 2012 at 4:53 pm

I was reading some of the articles on cleansing , I am no expert , i can only tell you what Hindus do?
If you can light a wood fire in a Iron pan and put some incense in it and move in every room , every corner and recite prayers of your relegion , let the smoke prevade everywhere. Please use sea salt or rock salt for cleansing . Bathe everyone in the family in salt water. Get some home purifying music from you tube and play it all day . Please put some quotes& relegion symbols from ur relegion on walls . Hope it helps . If in Canada or USA get Native American to help you with this. I hope i am helpful. GOD bless all.

Hi, I used an space clearing iphone App from http://www.spacecleanser.com and found it to be very helpful I noticed a brighter mood in the room I was using it in.
Hope this helps someone.

Olivia May 13, 2013 at 10:36 pm

I have negative spirit in my townhouse I live in. i don’t hae sea salt but I do have regular salt so I’m going to try to cleanse it with that. The negative spirit is upstairs in my townhouse. It makes weird sounds and I can hear someone walking upstairs when i’m downstairs even though I will be the only one in the house at the time. i wonder if getting re baptized will help get rid of it. I’m sick of hearing spirits. I’ve been able to hear spirits for a while

Jules June 4, 2013 at 9:16 pm

What a fabulous article, something I will use in my own home. I’m just wondering if it is something I could use to help some friends who have a negative energy in their home. So far I have offered help with positive energy crystals and a mantra for meditation, however they have asked if I can cleanse too.

Carol June 15, 2013 at 2:24 pm

Thank you for your wonderful article! I am moving into a rented apartment and will be doing this ritual. I plan on doing it before I move in with furniture, so I was wondering if it would be okay to leave the salt on the carpet for more than 12 hours, even maybe only vacuum it after the furniture is moved in since I will have movers do it. What is your suggestion?
Thank you so much!

Carole Fogarty June 16, 2013 at 11:38 am

Hi Carol, yes you could easily leave the salt longer no problems. Good luck with the move. xx Carole

Janice July 24, 2013 at 4:54 am

What about removing negative spirit from outside the home?

ingrid August 21, 2013 at 1:17 pm

Good article, I tried it but something I can’t explain keeps happening.. the morning after the cleansing oil appears on the floors in different parts of the house and it’s happened several times..why is it bad? Help

Gina Solis October 19, 2013 at 12:26 pm

Can you place your bible on the special altar table?

hi, my mum feels her house has a lot of negative energy and wanted to cleanse it with sage. she also feels very privileged to have spirits in her home. she would like to know if cleansing her home will cause the welcome spirits to leave. she is more than happy for any positive spirits to be there, but does feel at times her house makes her feel heavy and grey, if that makes sense? any info would be lovely, thanks.

elena December 29, 2013 at 11:54 am

Hello there,

I really feel that I need to do this cleansing ASAP. However my energies do feel a bit low, a little depressed. I know you wrote not to do this ritual when energies are low. I feel this negative energies are making me feel like this. Can i still do this cleansing?

Jason March 14, 2014 at 11:11 am

we are are expecting our first child soon, and as I did when we first purchased this home, today I did a cleansing ritual of the new nursery. I had been having a feeling for the last few weeks that something had entered our home and was hiding out, waiting. (several generations of the men my family have been attached to the same unhappy spirit). Well sure enough a found it hiding in a corner and when I blew the smoke from the white sage there were sparks and flames, the embers even burned my arm. With several loud claps moving it towards the open doors it is gone once again.

Jordan April 3, 2014 at 11:10 am

Great post! I’m a huge fan of cleansing with white sage. The energy in my home (and myself) instantly feels uplifted.

marlene d. May 3, 2014 at 12:14 am

I recently acquired some books(cookbooks health books & self help books etc.) that used to belong to my friends fathers girlfriend. She moved out when my friends father passed away. (he died of cancer in his home) and left these books behind which my friend gave to me. how do I go about cleansing any negative energy from these books? would i use the same for any other objects I own or acquire? Thanks, Marlene

Carole Fogarty May 4, 2014 at 12:08 pm

Definately with a sage smudge stick. xx Carole

Marlene May 3, 2014 at 12:18 am

Carole Fogarty May 4, 2014 at 12:07 pm

Yes, Marlene, Frankincense would be fabulous.

Which type of rock salt can I use for energy cleansing ? Is this the same as coarse sea salt ? Can Himalayan rock salt be used for energy cleansing ?
Your advice would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Lori M. July 1, 2014 at 6:56 pm

My brother in law passed away on 05/15/14 from heart disease. He passed at his home with my husband & daughter with him in the master bedroom. My husband is now the owner of his home. Once we get everything of his brothers removed from the house eventually we’ll be moving in. I know a cleanse needs to be done. Would you suggest doing the whole house or just the master bedroom? Also what should we use to to do this?
Thank You Carole

Tibetan Herbal Amulet – Nagpo Gujor (Health Protection)
article: 15999

Nagpo Gujor Pill (Health Protection) Nagpo Gujor is a traditional Tibetan method of protection against infectious diseases and epidemics. A mixture of Himalayan herbs and minerals, commonly used in the Tibetan healing system. According to this holistic method, sicknesses manifest firstly on the energetic level and later on the physical level. Prepared with care and devotion by Tibetan lamas and monks, the Nagpo Gujor pills, energized through their prayers and blessings, have the capacity to defend the body from infectious and endemic sicknesses.

How to use: The pill should be worn touching the skin, as the heat of the body energizes the ingredients of the pill. The pill should never be eaten or wet. The pill is a preventative measure and will not heal sicknesses that are already manifest or in incubation. It is advisable to recite the following mantra to increase the blessing power of the pill: Om Muni Muni Maha Muni Shakya Muniye Soham.

protect agaions any for from black magic and spirits.

You will want to see a reputable “healer”, to cleanse you of any “negative attachments”. They can easily cause strange and often “un-diagnosable” illness. Good luck!

Kate December 7, 2014 at 4:00 pm

This was the first article I ever read and took a few tips to try a year ago. The one that got me hooked? The clapping in each room or area of the house. I could immediately hear the difference between a dense Echo and a clear crisp sound you talk about above. It was so striking, I even had my husband try it who is very supportive, but not all that … Interested, let’s say, in my studies. He could hear it too.

When we cleanse the energy in the house now we walk around each room and corner and high five each other stateing our intention before we do it.

Talk about raising the frequency of a room! So much fun and so light and beautiful my house has become (so sayeth like yoda).

Thank you.

Susan January 22, 2015 at 8:17 am

Hi Carole, I am thinking I need to cleanse my home of remnants of negative energy left over from the previous owner(s). We bought the home a little over a year ago, the family that lived here went through a very bitter divorce and messy break up. We recently have been experiencing unlucky events (plumbing, damage etc) and while these events could be caused simply by structural deficiencies, I am convinced that the woman that lived here left an extremely negative energy on our home. We have recently had to try and deal with her because of these problems and the negotiations have left me feeling uneasy and drained, even threatened. I have also, in the recent past, survived a serious illness (breast cancer) and I am concerned that this negativity will have a detrimental effect on my health. Sounds a little paranoid but I am a very intuitive person and I believe that I need to somehow cleanse our home (and my soul!) of her anger and resentful aura. Do you have any helpful suggestions? When I do your 6 step cleanse, do I walk around the house clockwise or counter? Silly question maybe but my research has found contradictory instructions. Thanks in advance for your advice and counsel.
