Energy Drink High in Iron and Magnesium:

by Carole Fogarty

“Eat in a soul satisfying environment” Jost Sauer

Early this month I was on a mission to find a nutritious snack to combat signs of afternoon fatigue.  Symptoms such as fuzzy thinking and fading energy levels.  My criteria was  simple.  Easy, highly nutritious and nourishing to the nervous system.  Whilst I do love my chai tea and bliss balls I was ready for a change.

As luck would have it, a girlfriend lent me a fabulous Ayurvedic cookbook and I found the perfect snack in the form of a fruit/nut energy drink.  Its delicious and high in iron and magnesium.  Whilst the colour may be a little off putting (brown) the drink is sweet and very filling.  I absolutely love it.

The description in the cookbook reads:

This drink is very nourishing to the tissues and is absolutely delicious.  It is great for giving an “energy hit”.   It is high is iron and magnesium so is particularly good for building the blood, nervous systems under stress and for growing kids and pregnant/breastfeeding women”

Nourishing fruit and nut energy drink:

Ingredients:

6 almonds (preferably blanched)

2 dried dates

1 dried fig

10 – 15 sultanas/raisins

2/3 cup of water

Method:

Step one:

Soak almonds, dates, fig and sultanas in water for at least 3 hours.

Step two:

Mix together the pre-soaked mixture in a blender, adjusting the amount of water depending on how thick or thin you like it.  I prefer quite a thick shake so tend to use  less water.

Variations:

To make the drink even more nourishing and delicious add a little warm, spiced unhomogenised biodynamic/organic milk.  Warm milk is a very Ayurvedic thing. In case you don’t know un-homogenised milk is more easily digested than homogenised milk.  I personally like to add a little ground cardamon as its one of my favourite flavours.

The Warmth Cookbook:

The cookbook I sourced this recipe from is called Warmth, The Cookbook and is the creation of the Mudita Institue in Byron, Bay Australia.

I will try this drink as I am always looking for ways to increase iron as I do not eat meat.
