Smell Your Way To Calm:

by Carole Fogarty

Smell is a potent wizard that transports you across thousands of miles and all the years you have lived”  Helen Keller

Your sense of smell can trigger memories, invoke relaxation, warn you of danger and sharpen your awareness of other people and places. It can influence your mood and determine how long you stay in a room.  Having said that, why not use your sense of smell, to inhale more moments of calm into your day.

One of the easiest ways to “smell in” relaxation is by inhaling the aroma and therapeutic qualities of essential oils.  My favorite calming and de-stressing oils at the moment are geranium, vetiver and rose.  In fact, each day I dab 3 drops of rose oil onto my face and then onto my wrists. Yum. Apart from helping with stress its also wonderful for anti-aging.

Of course essential oils are not your only option, you might prefer the smell of comfort food baking, flowers, freshly washed sheets or clothes,  real air, your garden, pots of yummy herbs in your kitchen or the smell of your local bakery.

Either way, pay more attention to the smells around you (eliminate those that stress you out) and add more of those that calm and relax you.

Smell Your Way To Calm Anywhere, Anytime:

1: Smell your way to calm in your car:

There’s a couple ways I add the smell of calm into my car.  One is to spray my seats with 6 drops of lavender essential oil mixed with about 250 ml of water in a spray bottle.  The other way, is to wipe my dashboard and steering wheel with a damp cloth that has been infused with a few drops of lavender.   I love lavender for the car as its great for calming my boys.

2: Smell your way to calm in bed:

Add a few drops of your favorite relaxing essential oil to the final rinse of your sheets in the washing machine.  Alternately add a few drops to the inside of your pillows, 5 minutes before you need to go to bed.

One of my favorite self care treats at night is to dab 2 drops of the oil, vetiver onto the souls of my feet.  It work wonders in slowing me down and grounding my energies.

3: Smell your way to calm whilst on the phone:

What a better way to “smell in” calm than when you are chatting on the phone.  Simply grab a clean damp cloth and dab with a few drops of any calming essential oil and rub all over your mobile phone or hand set.  Inhale deeply, as often as you like, whilst chatting on the phone and absorb the therapeutic qualities.
