“Insanity is to behave like someone you are not. You are unique, do not repeat other peoples patterns” by Paulo Coehlo
Asking yourself the question “What do I really, really, really want?” rewards you with clarity. It asks that you stop, dig deep and take some time out to get to know the real you all over again.
Book Cover: Just Ask the Right Questions to Get What You Want
I personally love journaling answers to this question, as they are always revealing, sometimes surprising and often a huge relief.
The only skill you need is trust. A trust that what you are writing down, is coming from your inner wisdom and not from others peoples expectations of you.
Even though I feel I do know what I really, really, really want, I still believe its important to spend time each year giving my inner wisdom a louder voice, away from all the busyness of the world.
I really, really, really want to live more in the present moment and practice mindfulness as often as I can, with every task I do. I know this will help me be a better mother and even a better writer. If I’m more mindful then I won’t easily be distracted or get caught up in unnecessary over thinking, and that’s got to be a good thing. I also want to have a deeper sense of feeling stiller or more peaceful inside. Mindfulness, I feel is the perfect tool to help me achieve this.
How To Paint A Picture Of Who You Really Are:
In a quiet moment (usually early morning) I grab my journal, pen and write What do I really, really, really want? across the top of my page. I then simply let my pen answer with whatever it wants to write. The trick is, not to think too much or worry about neatness or spelling.
Sometimes the answers are short and sweet, other times lengthy. Sometimes they are totally materialist and selfish and other times deep and meaningful.
Either way, over time (days or weeks), a common theme will begin appear on the pages, revealing what it is you really, really, really want.
Thank You Elizabeth Gilbert For This Life Changing Question:
I discovered this question when reading my favorite book for 2007 called Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.
If you haven’t read this book, do yourself a favor and borrow or buy yourself a copy. You will cry, you will laugh lots and above all you will be inspired to really, really, really live your life like never before. Thank you Elizabeth.

Great article, Carole! Every year I plan my year out in advance. I’m a little late this year, but it’s coming. Having an “agenda” for the year keeps me excited and purposeful with much satisfaction obtained when crossing off completed items.
I will try your journaling suggestion and see if I come up with anything new or that hasn’t occurred to me before.
