Have You Got Time To Stand Still?

by Carole Fogarty

“You find stillness by not looking” Unknown

Consider cultivating stillness (on the inside) whilst moving through life.  Simply stop, do nothing and be still for 5 or even 15 minutes .  No reading, no meditating, listening to music, eating or talking.  After all how hard can it be – to be still – without a purpose?

Expanding the calm spot inside of you, I believe, has to one of the greatest gifts you can offer your soul, your heart and your life.  It also may well be the secret ingredient to living life more lightly.  Imagine how different life may feel or be, if you were able to enjoy regular pauses and moments of stillness in your day.

Cultivate your inner stillness:

Sitting or lying “still” certainly does not automatically mean that your body and mind will instantly feel calm and relaxed on the inside.  In fact, its quite the opposite (in the beginning – or on those days).

When you start practising be aware that your mind is likely to complain vigorously.  “This is boring, I’ve got things to do, get up, move, you haven’t got time to be doing this, oh no, I’m about to totally explode if I don’t move now”.

Know, that no-one has ever burst open at the seems while resting in stillness – even if you feel like that’s exactly what’s about to happen with the scattered, bustling energy surging through you.

Resting in stillness reveals, in a very honest way just how much activity we have going on inside of us. Endless rushing thoughts, mixture of emotions and feelings along with physical ailments of fatigue, exhaustion and stress.

What being still looks and feels like:

Here’s what I believe being still looks and feels like.

  • Sit and close your eyes
  • Sit, with eyes open and stare out the window – watch a cloud
  • Sit, with eyes open and watch the gentle flicker of a candle flame
  • Sit next to a big tree and be with nature
  • Lay on your bed and breath into your belly
  • Lay down in a tranquil yoga posture
  • Seek nothing
  • Do not anticipate what to do next
  • Just be with yourself, feelings and emotions
  • Feel and follow your breathe
  • Let your thoughts come and go without engaging in them
  • Take care of all emotions that arise. If frustration arises don’t chase it away.  Take good care of it, observe it, feel it without letting your mind get worried about it.
  • Gaze at a special object without describing it or thinking about it
  • Closing your eyes is probably easier

I absolutely love this book.  It”s certainly my favourite book for 2011. I felt such a connection – it brought tears to my eyes – on more than one occasion.

Don’t you love it when a book really resonates with you.

Hey Carole,

I can’t wait to try this with you – all too often I find myself and my mind going a mile a minute and always thinking I have something to do.

Thanks for the great article!

Jessi
